In October 2026, an operator customer migration took place in Argentina. Under competition regulatory requirements, approximately 6 million mobile numbers and 200,000 fixed-line access customers formerly belonging to Movistar were transferred in bulk to the Tuenti network owned by Metrotel. The project used A2P SMS as the core notification channel for end users, making it a major event in the local A2P sector in October with practical operational reference value.
The customer migration followed Telecom Argentina's acquisition of Telefónica Argentina's Movistar business. To prevent market monopolization, regulators required the acquirer to divest part of its customer assets, with this group of customers being taken over by Metrotel under the Tuenti brand. The platform sent bulk A2P SMS messages to affected customers using a Tuenti sender ID. The messages cited the competition court's ruling, informed customers of the operator change, and included the customer service hotline 0800‑321‑0700 and short code 700 for inquiries, while making clear that the notification SMS channel did not support direct customer replies. The overall migration was carried out in batches on a gradual basis, with no single unified cutover time.
The change in network ownership of the numbers also creates real routing-level risks for A2P service providers. Numbers originally belonging to Movistar are gradually being migrated to the Tuenti network. When enterprises send one-time passcodes or service notifications to these numbers, they need to continuously confirm the synchronization progress of number routing tables with SMS aggregators. If routing updates lag, message delivery failures may occur, and enterprises need to keep tracking routing adjustments in line with the phased migration schedule.
