Mexico’s first‑phase mobile‑ID registration deadline ends; phased service suspension launched

The deadline for Phase 1 of mandatory real‑name registration for mobile numbers set by Mexico’s telecommunications regulator CRT expired on 15 August 2026. Numbers ending in digit 0 entered a 72‑hour gradual temporary service‑suspension workflow. As of 16 August, 72 million mobile phone numbers nationwide had completed real‑name binding. Real‑name registration will continue in batches sorted by the last digit of each mobile number. Unregistered numbers will not be directly cancelled; service can be restored once real‑name registration is finished.

After the 15 August cutoff date, registration outlets saw surging user traffic. Unregistered numbers ending in 0 will not be permanently deactivated. After temporary suspension, subscribers can still complete real‑name registration to restore service. Users can submit registration through mobile‑based online platforms with zero‑rate access to operator registration portals, or visit operator customer‑service centres in‑person. A valid official ID containing the CURP code is required. No biometric data is gathered during this registration procedure.

Mexico applies a phased‑rollout model based on the last digit of mobile numbers. The registration deadline for numbers ending in 1 is 31 August. For remaining digit endings, service‑suspension cycles for non‑compliant numbers will run every 15 days until all numbers ending in digit 9 finish registration.
