In early 2025, Nigerian telecom operator Airtel Nigeria pioneered an AI‑driven "Spam SMS Alert" service designed to proactively identify and block suspicious text messages.
Requiring no user activation, the system runs silently in the background and scans every incoming SMS in real‑time using more than 250 parameters. Within just over two months, from March 13 to May 20, 2025, it successfully blocked over 9.6 million suspicious messages, of which more than 9.13 million originated from external networks, highlighting the severity of cross‑network spam. Dinesh Balsingh, CEO of Airtel Nigeria, stated that this forms a key part of the company’s "broader digital‑security agenda" to build a safer communication ecosystem for subscribers.
The solution balances operational efficiency and privacy protection. Each message is processed in under 2 milliseconds to preserve user experience. Meanwhile, the system does not store or analyse message content, safeguarding user privacy at the technical level. Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice‑Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), welcomed the initiative. He noted that the industry needs more proactive measures to tackle rising digital risks and commended the operator for rolling out intelligent defences. This sets a technical‑protection benchmark for the whole sector and delivers practical reference for NCC’s upcoming unified licensing and regulatory framework for A2P services.
