BNamericas published an analysis article on October 14, 2026, stating that AT&T will sell its Mexico wireless business for $2 billion in cash to a consortium jointly owned 50/50 by Televisa and Fintech Holdings. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, which will reshape Mexico's telecommunications competitive landscape.
This move allows AT&T to exit the Mexican market and concentrate its capital on domestic fiber-optic and 5G network construction in the United States, positioning itself to meet network demands in the AI era. The acquired AT&T Mexico is the country's second-largest mobile operator, with approximately 24.7 million mobile subscribers. Televisa already owns the fixed-line brand Izzi and the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Izzi Móvil, which had around 820,000 mobile subscribers as of June 2026. Following the acquisition of AT&T Mexico, Televisa will own its own mobile network and be able to bundle fixed-line, pay TV, and mobile services into a "quad-play" offering. Its combined fixed-line and mobile subscriber market share will rise from 8% to 19%, making it a more formidable competitor alongside Telcel (América Móvil).
The remainder of the mobile market will be made up of Telefónica (accounting for 13.7% of total mobile lines, using AT&T's network) and Bait, an MVNO under the Walmart Group (accounting for 7.46%). The $450 million acquisition of Telefónica by Oxio and Newfoundland Capital Management has been approved and is expected to be completed in the near term.
