Nigeria Raises Local SMS Prices

According to Nigeria’s SMS pricing guideline, the standard retail rate for local SMS rose generally from ₦4 to around ₦6 per message in 2025. Pricing for bulk corporate SMS and international SMS API services varies significantly depending on sending volume, carrier networks, route quality and service providers. Enterprises sending verification codes, transaction alerts, logistics notifications and marketing messages need to factor local tariffs, gateway fees, compliance requirements and actual delivery rates into their SMS budgets.

Standard SMS charges for individual local subscribers stand at roughly ₦6 per message. The price hike follows the telecommunications tariff adjustment approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Actual rates differ across plans, customer segments and operators. Certain legacy approved packages retain the old rate of ₦4 per SMS, while newly launched mainstream plans mostly charge ₦6 per message. Businesses and end users should refer to operators’ current approved tariff plans and live billing pages when comparing prices.

Bulk corporate SMS is normally cheaper than retail consumer rates, with tiered pricing offered by providers based on message volume. For large-scale corporate dispatches, rates may range from ₦1.80 to ₦2.15 per SMS. Such quotations usually exclude extra costs including platform access, dedicated sender IDs, template approval, content moderation, DND routing and delivery reporting. Low-cost routes do not guarantee higher delivery performance; companies should verify whether providers use compliant and stable local routes.

International SMS API suppliers mostly charge in US dollars at approximately $0.0055 to $0.0075 per message, with potential additional carrier surcharges. International platforms enable unified cross-border connectivity, yet SMS traffic into Nigeria must still comply with local DND regulations, sender registration rules and carrier content filtering policies. Companies handling financial services, one-time passwords and marketing campaigns in particular should not base purchasing decisions solely on per-message rates.

When selecting SMS services, businesses may evaluate local network reach, priority handling for transactional SMS, retry logic for failed deliveries, delivery receipts, unsubscribe management, data protection and customer support. For high-volume verification codes and transaction alerts, stable, traceable and fully compliant services are usually more valuable than the lowest unit price.
