Jio Lets Users Block Marketing SMS and Calls

In compliance with TRAI’s commercial communication regulations, Reliance Jio provides users with the “Do Not Disturb” (DND) service. Users can register for full rejection of commercial calls and promotional SMS via the MyJio App, Jio account settings, dialing 1909, or sending “START 0” by SMS to 1909. After submitting the request, users will receive a confirmation message containing a unique registration number, and DND preferences are typically updated within 24 hours.

The primary function of DND is to block unsolicited marketing calls and promotional SMS, not to interrupt all SMS services. Bank OTPs, payment verifications, transaction alerts, bills, logistics updates, service status notifications, and government public interest information should generally not be blocked by DND. Users may also opt for a partial rejection mode to only block promotional communications from specific sectors, such as banking and insurance, real estate, education, health, consumer goods, communications and entertainment, or travel and leisure.

According to Jio, users can access “Settings > Service Settings > Do Not Disturb” via the MyJio App to select full blocking or set preferences for specific categories as needed. For SMS registration, users can send “START” followed by the corresponding category code to 1909; to fully block commercial communications, send “START 0”. This mechanism aligns with TRAI’s user preference registration system, and operators are required to verify users’ DND status before delivering commercial communications.

If Jio users continue to receive commercial SMS or marketing calls that are inconsistent with their consent or registered preferences, they may file a complaint with 1909. Complaints should include details such as the sending number, date and time of receipt, content of the communication, and its category, and must be submitted within three days of receiving the message. Upon receiving a valid complaint, the operator will send a confirmation number to the user and investigate the sender and relevant marketing service providers in accordance with TRAI rules.

It should be noted that DND cannot guarantee the blocking of all fraudulent messages. Scammers may use regular personal numbers, spoofed sender IDs, internet telephony, or constantly changing links to evade routine detection. When users receive messages requesting OTPs, bank card details, passwords, or immediate fund transfers, they should still verify them through the official app, official website, and customer service hotline of the bank or enterprise, and should not click on links from unknown SMS directly.
